Year-Long Traffic Restrictions Begin On Broadway Bridge
The city of Portland is getting ready to lay streetcar tracks across the Broadway Bridge. It's part of a 3-mile extension of the line that will carry streetcars to Portland's east side.The Broadway Bridge will be closed to trucks and cars over 12 feet starting today. And construction will limit regular traffic to one lane in each direction. Those restrictions will remain in place for the next year or so. Dan Anderson is a spokesman for the Portland Bureau of Transportation. He says more disruption is coming in the months ahead.Dan Anderson: “This summer the Broadway Bridge will be closed completely for two months. That starts July 6th." Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to cross the bridge. Anderson expects the new east side streetcar loop to be ready for riders two years from now. The federal government is funding over half of the 127 million dollar project.© 2010 OPB
