Wreckage Of WWII Navy Plane Found Near Rockaway Beach

 Plane Wreckage
A section of the WWII Curtiss SB2C Helldiver Navy plane is seen in the forest near the Oregon coast.
A World War II Navy airplane was discovered last week in dense forest near Rockaway Beach. A commercial logging company found the wreckage of the plane on March 18. Workers spotted a wing, tail section, landing gear and other debris. The Tillamook county sheriff’s office, Oregon State Police, and US Navy are investigating the site. They say the plane was a Curtiss SB2C Helldiver. That’s a dive bomber that flew off air craft carriers and was used in the Pacific. Dale Davis is a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy Public Affairs Office. He said it’s unusual to find a plane that crashed around 65 years ago. ‘At this time there is no evidence of human remains. But there’s an airplane there, somebody had to be flying it," he said.  Davis says the Navy hasn’t found any records of where the plane came from. Naval station Tillamook used to be located about 20 miles from the crash site.  It was decommissioned in 1948.
