Oregon is among the states where White Rabbit Candy is being recalled, because it may contain melamine. Becca Bartleson reports.

It may be only one bad batch of candy. Or it could be more widespread.

But White Rabbit Candy, which is manufactured in China and sold in several American states, is being recalled by its distributor.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration determined that some of the candy contains the poisonous chemical melamine.Melamine is at the center of a scandal involving tainted milk in China.

Dr. Emilio DeBess with the Oregon Department of Human Services says melamine is usually dangerous when consumed on a regular basis.

Emilio DeBess: "In the long term this compound causes health effects which is why we're concerned about. And our own Oregon Department of Agriculture has actively been talking to the stores to pull them off the shelves."

DeBess says people who've bought White Rabbit Candy should return it to the store or throw it in the trash.
