West Nile Virus Making Its Now Annual Threat
Mosquito bites can become uncomfortable, and they may even be dangerous for some Oregonians.
Technicians at Oregon State University identified over 5000 mosquitoes in Eastern Oregon counties carrying the West Nile Virus.
It can cause mild flu-like symptoms and in some serious cases meningitis or encephalitis.
State public health veterinarian Emilio DeBess says it's a good idea to be aware after a mosquito has bitten you.
Emilio DeBess: "We’re actually asking you that you make sure to think about it if you develop any symptoms such as headache or fever to go and see your doctor because you maybe infected with West Nile."
Even better, he says: Don’t get bitten in the first place. Use protection like screens in windows, insect repellent and long sleeved clothing.
