Washington Lawmakers Pass Gay Marriage 55-43
OLYMPIA, Wash. – A bill to legalize same-sex marriage is on its way to Governor Chris Gregoire's desk. After a three hour debate Wednesday, the state House of Representatives passed the plan 55-43. Hundreds of gay rights supporters reacted from the gallery.
The Senate passed the plan last week. Governor Gregoire watched the House debate from the wings. She has said she'll sign the same-sex marriage law. It would take effect 90 days after that.
But the landmark legislation could be put on hold until November: Opponents are vowing to collect enough signatures to force a referendum vote.
