Wash. Shellfish Harvester Appeals License Revocation
The case of an alleged shellfish poaching ring on Washington’s Hood Canal has taken a twist.
The owner of G&R Quality Seafood is now asking the state to give him back his license to harvest.
His appeal comes despite an ongoing criminal investigation and a history of health and safety violations.
We first told you about G&R Quality Seafood last March. That’s when Washington Fish and Wildlife police raided the operation on Hood Canal and shut it down after a months-long undercover investigation.
Authorities allege G&R was a front for a massive oyster and clam poaching operation. Charges are still pending.
After the raid, Washington’s Department of Health revoked G&R’s license and imposed a $60,000 fine.
Now owner Rodney Clark is appealing that decision. At a hearing in Olympia he acknowledged his company was a – quote - “nest of chaos.” But:
Rodney Clark: “I cannot control the actions of others, even though they might be employed for me, I cannot control every move that they make.”
The State of Washington argues Clark had plenty of chances to comply with health regulations - regulations aimed at keeping shellfish safe to eat.
A judge is expected to decide Clark’s appeal within the next 45 days.
