Volunteers Working To Recover Bodies Found On Mt. Hood

Searchers have located what they believe to be the remains of Katie Nolan. The Portland woman disappeared on Mt Hood last December while climbing with two others.

Nolan's body was found near remains searchers found earlier this week. That body is believed to be that of Anthony Vietti, another member of the December climbing party.

The bodies are above 9700 feet near the Reid Glacier Head Wall on the mountain's north side. The terrain is treacherous.

Clackamas County Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Shane Strangfield says the effort to recover the bodies is an all-day process.

Shane Strangfield: "Almost 30 people are volunteering their time. They started out at 4 a.m. this morning and we still don't have a set of remains down."

The bodies have not yet been positively identified as those of Nolan and Vietti. The Clackamas County Medical Examiner will make that determination once the remains arrive at Timberline Lodge.

Remains of the third climber, Luke Gullberg of Des Moines, Washington, were found last December shortly after the party failed to return from its climb.
