Hundreds of people are cleaning mud and destroyed furniture out of their homes in Vernonia.
Many say they were taken by surprise at the speed with which the Nehelem River burst its banks Monday.
Kristian Foden-Vencil trekked around the small town Wednesday and talked with ham radio operators, Red Cross volunteers, and residents, and he produced this audio post card.
