Tomatoes May Not Be Behind Salmonella Outbreak

Federal officials say tomatoes may not be the culprit in a salmonella outbreak that sickened hundreds of people across the nation, including ten Oregonians.

Dr. Emilio DeBess is an epidemiologist with the Oregon Public Health Division.

He’s still trying to figure out how nearly a dozen Oregonians became infected with salmonella since early April.

Emilio DeBess: “We know that they, all of them consumed some sort of tomato dish.  Whether it’s salsa or anything related to tomatoes, we just don’t know the particular ingredient that actually caused that illness.”

DeBess recommends checking the FDA website for updates on which tomatoes remain safe to eat.
