Task Force Addresses Problems With Geese Populations
A special task force formed by the Oregon Legislature to address problems associated with migratory geese populations is expected to deliver its final recommendations Monday. David Nogueras has more.
The task force is recommending expanding hunting opportunities, re-examining desired population objectives, compensating to farmers for crop losses and using pesticides on affected crops.
The task force is also recommending requesting an additional $2 million in federal funds for crop damage control.
Michelle Dennehy is a spokeswoman with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. She says the panel's recommendations must now be approved by a number of interested groups.
Michelle Dennehy: "Because geese are migratory birds, management is a joint responsibility of federal and state governments. And many aspects are actually governed by international treaties, so a lot of the recommendations will have to be taken to other people and agreed upon by other parties."Among those parties, she says are native Alaskan Tribes, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service, as well as other states.
