A suspicious fire at Salem High School caused about $15,000 damage to gear for the marching band's color guard.

Deputy Fire Marshal Laird Case told the Statesman Journal Wednesday's fire is suspicious because there's nothing electrical or easily combustible in the storage closet that is usually locked.

The closet held uniforms, flags and equipment for the color guard, which is funded through donations and student contributions.

A sprinkler doused the fire but flooded four classrooms, including band and orchestra rooms. Band teacher Brian Bells and others quickly moved instruments off the floor.

No one was injured. Students were sent home early.
