Suspect Arrested in Washington Trooper Shooting
Police in Long Beach, Washington early Monday arrested a man accused of shooting a state patrol trooper. The trooper was released from a Portland hospital Monday with a bullet still lodged in the back of his head. Doug Nadvornick reports.
State Patrol spokesman Bob Calkins says officers apprehended 45-year-old Martin A. Jones. He's now behind bars in the Pacific County Jail in South Bend, Washington.
Calkins says investigators believe Jones shot Trooper Scott Johnson in the head in Long Beach early Saturday. Johnson was inventorying a car that was to be towed when the suspect approached, spoke briefly with Johnson, then fired twice. Jones will face charges of attempted murder and first-degree assault. Calkins says the arrest doesn't end the investigation.Bob Calkins: “Primarily now we're looking for tips regarding potential associates of Mr. Jones; any vehicles that he drives, any firearms that he owns or structures that are associated with him.” He says detectives are serving more search warrants. Meanwhile, he says, Trooper Johnson is now out of the hospital and recovering at home. I'm Doug Nadvornick reporting.
