Survey Suggests Many Drivers Need A Refresher Course
If you had to retake the test for your driver's license, do you think you would pass? An insurance company re-tested 5,000 drivers nationwide. Tom Banse reports how your fellow Northwest motorists performed. The folks at GMAC Insurance are curious how much we remember about the rules of the road. They selected 20 questions from state written exams for a driver's license. A polling company then retested 5,200 licensed drivers. In reporting the results, GMAC says, "It's clear Americans need a refresher course." Northwest drivers actually fared better than average. Nine out of 10 Oregonians received a passing score. That's second best in the country, behind Kansas. Idaho ranked eighth and Washington eleventh. But before you start feeling smug, consider this. The average scores posted on the retake suggest there are close to a million drivers in the region who wouldn't pass their state's written exam if re-tested today.
