State Works For Food Safety At Farmers Market
Oregon hasn’t avoided the national peanut scare that’s sickened more than 600 people.
Several companies have recalled products that have a risk of salmonella contamination.
And independent vendors aren't immune. The state Department of Agriculture just recently met with the state’s small farmers and farmers' market sellers.
Kelly Streit is a nutrition consultant and is on the Oregon Farmers Market Association’s advisory board.
Kelly Streit: “You probably as a consumer won’t see anything different. But for the vendors and the farmers, some of the education and policies and procedures that may be asked of them have slightly changed.”
The state will hold food safety workshops across the state to educate vendors.
Officials insist the outreach isn’t connected to any specific problems.
But they want to introduce higher standards for farmers' markets, before this year's market season begins in the spring.
