Spokane Sets Yearly Snow Record
Spokane has now compiled its snowiest winter ever. The National Weather Service says four new inches that fell on Sunday either tied or pushed the city past a 59-year-old record.
There’s still some disagreement about this winter’s total. Several other Northwest cities are also above average for snowfall. Inland Northwest correspondent Doug Nadvornick reports.
More than 93 inches of snow have fallen on Spokane this winter. About 60 of that came in December, when the city set a monthly record. Nearly all of that is gone.
John Livingston from the National Weather Service in Spokane remembers the huge snow dump before Christmas that paralyzed the Inland Northwest for days.
John Livingston: “While the lowlands were getting pounded with a lot of snow, the higher elevations really didn’t get as much snow. And right now, our snowpack in our region is standing about 80-to-85 percent of what would be considered normal.”
More than 23 inches have fallen on Seattle, making it one of the snowiest winters in the Emerald City’s history. But that’s still less than half of the all-time record for a Seattle winter.
Boise recorded a monthly snowfall record in December. Pendleton and Lewiston also have had above average snowfall this season.
