Second Round Of Across-The-Board Cuts Made Public
Some state employees in Oregon may get layoff notices soon after the latest round of budget reductions announced Thursday.
A new influx of federal cash will offset most of the cuts to human services and K-12 education. And legislative leaders say they'll use some of the state's dwindling stash of reserves to head off closures to state prisons.
But, at the Oregon Department of Revenue, as many as 131 people could lose their jobs.
Employees were discussing the proposal Thursday outside the agency's Salem headquarters.
David Espinoza works in the IT department.
David Espinoza: "I don't think I'll be affected, but I do feel bad for the people that, you know, there's a lot of people that are single parents that if they lose their jobs, that's it."
A Department of Revenue spokeswoman says layoffs could be avoided if lawmakers agree to tap emergency funding.
The across the board cuts come after the latest revenue forecast that shows Oregon losing another $377 million in expected tax collections. That's on top of a half-billion dollar drop in the spring.
