Schools around the state are planning to host clinics to give swine flu shots -- when more of the vaccine arrives. Kristian Foden-Vencil reports.

Schools will hold clinics at different times and in different ways. Many won't get involved at all.

The Portland District has five clinics scheduled, some during school hours, some afterwards. The district is providing the space and logistical support.

Doctor Gary Oxman with the Multnomah County Health Department says his office is providing medical staff and the vaccine, but not everyone has to get a jab.

Gary Oxman: "When I was young back when we had the great polio vaccine clinics, there was much less attention given to the consent process and people just went and received their vaccine.  Now things are much more regulated in that regard and really much more respectful of people's right to be informed about the vaccine and to make a clear choice to receive it or not."

Clackamas County has opened a free H1N1 clinic on its Red Soils campus in Oregon City.

A new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that about half of the people who are hospitalized by swine flu had preexisting conditions including asthma, diabetes and lung disease.
