Rural Blazers Fans Begin Boycott Over Cable Deal

The Portland Trailblazers have won three straight games, one of which was their first road win. Tuesday night they play Utah.

And besides the wins, the games have actually been exciting to watch. Many fans say the Rose Garden has been louder and more exciting this season than any of the past 5 years.

But this week, some frustrated Blazers fans called for a boycott.

Chuck Cushman is a fan in rural Washington. He's organized the protest.

Chuck Cushman: “And if you have Comcast Cable, you live in an urban area and have Comcast, you are seeing the Blazers on a regular basis and you don't know there's a problem. But the fact is tens-of-thousands, maybe hundreds-of-thousands, of Blazer fans in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and other places are being disenfranchised.”

The problem comes because 50 Blazers games this season are part of a $120 million-dollar deal the team signed with Comcast.

That contract means those games can only be shown on Comcast SportsNet. That's a channel only available to Comcast cable subscribers.

Cushman says it may be in Comcast's short-term interest to keep the games to itself -- it encourages people in big cities to buy Comcast cable.

But Cushman isn't just a regular-old fan. He's a big-time conservative political activist in Washington.

Chuck Cushman: “And they're in for a big surprise because I'm a frustrated Blazer fan and its something I know how to do. I have 6-hundred-thousand email addresses in my office, 9-hundred-thousand fax numbers, several million names. And we're gonna organize a boycott nationwide of Comcast all across the country.”

Cushman says he wants fans to call the Blazers and Comcast to voice their anger.

And also to stop shopping at, among others, advertisers such as Fred Meyer, Bi-Mart, and Taco Bell.
