Ripples, Big And Small, From Boeing Strike
Saturday marks the beginning of week two of the Boeing machinists’ union strike.
And as the walkout rolls on, more than just the 27,000 employees on the picket line are affected.
Boeing estimates it is losing $100 million every day of the strike.
And Boeing is negotiating with 20,000 engineers in the Northwest, also under the threat of strike related to similar issues over job security.
Tim Heeley is Boeing’s labor spokesman. He spoke on OPB’s Think Out Loud.
Tim Heeley: “We know the issues, we’ve gotten their first formal proposal and we’ll be looking over that and considering how we’re going to respond. We’re focused on getting an agreement; we’re not going to speculate on what might happen. We’re focused on getting an agreement with the engineers.”
Dubai-based Emirates Air is the first airline to announce strike-related delays.
The airline says Boeing has delayed shipment of three new large airplanes it was expecting to fly from Los Angeles and San Francisco.
And the work stoppage has further delayed the roll-out of Boeing’s brand-new, state-of-the-art jet, the 787 Dreamliner.
