Religious Laws Long Recognized By U.S. Court System
Newt Gingrich and other opponents of the proposed Islamic center in New York have raised the specter U.S. courts imposing Shariah -- Islamic -- law. It turns out that U.S. courts already recognize Shariah law at times -- just as they've recognized religious laws and customs of Christians and Orthodox Jews. But legal experts say religious law would never trump U.S. laws, and courts would never uphold practices such as polygamy or stoning for adultery.
