Recall Starts In Effort To Remove Portland Mayor Sam Adams
A group of Portlanders is organizing to recall Mayor Sam Adams, but it's going to be a while before they can take action.
It's been a few weeks since Mayor Adams admitted to a relationship with Beau Breedlove, a young man who was eighteen at the time.
Investigators are determining if Adams is guilty of any criminal conduct. But about 330 people aren't waiting to hear more. They've registered at recallsamadams.com, in an effort to remove the Mayor from office.
Jasun Wurster is a spokesman for the campaign. He confirms that the Oregon Constitution's so-called Sour Grapes law prevents any action right now.Jasun Wurster: "We have to wait six months before we can collect our first signature, but this is five months in which we can educate voters, and turn this into a positive campaign that brings people together." Wurster says the group is not raising money, running solely on volunteers.
He says the group will not endorse any candidate to replace Adams, but will keep pressure on the mayor in public situations, and prepare for a summer signature drive.
