Portland's Broadway Bridge Closing To Cars

Portland's Broadway Bridge closed Tuesday morning to cars and will soon close to all traffic.  People who drive across the bridge will have to find alternate routes for a couple of months.  Beth Hyams reports.

The Broadway Bridge is closed because the Portland Streetcar route is being extended.  The bridge will eventually be part of a new streetcar loop that links the east side of Portland with the current downtown line.

For now, though, there's no travel over the Broadway Bridge through September 3rd.

Portland transportation officials say drivers can expect delays in the vicinity of the bridge.

The streetcar is in the middle of a $147 million extension.  The new loop is expected to be up and running in a little more than two years.
