Attorneys for the city of Portland have requested a change of venue for the upcoming trial over James Chasse’s death. April Baer reports.

Attorneys for the city declined to comment beyond court documents filed Monday.

In the filing, the city contends media accounts  and a documentary film now in production  have spread various versions of James Chasse’s death while in police custody.

The defendants claim they believe an impartial jury could be found neither in Portland, nor in Eugene.

They suggest moving the trial to Seattle, Tacoma, or possibly Boise, Idaho.

In 2006, Chasse was pursued on foot by officers who said his behavior was suspicious. There was a struggle during his capture. His death was later ruled a case of blunt force trauma.

Suspension was recommended for two officers involved in the case, but Chasse’s family is still pursuing a civil case. 

Lawyers representing Chasse’s estate weren’t immediately available for questions.

The trial is scheduled to begin in June.
