Portland Public Schools Won't Reveal Central Office Cuts

Portland Public School's superintendant Carole Smith is still not revealing the details of her proposed central office cuts.

Monday night the Portland School Board gave the superintendant approval to move forward with the district's proposed budget cuts. This will include laying-off 120 teachers -- 60 fewer than the 180 lay-offs originally planned.

Around 25 jobs will also be eliminated from the central office. Which jobs exactly remain a mystery.

Matt Shelby is a spokeman for Portland Public Schools. He says the details of the cuts will not be made public until the employees know they are being let go.

Matt Shelby: "So at the school level people will be receiving notices within two to three weeks. I would imagine the central office timeline will be fairly similar."

The proposed teacher layoffs and central office cuts cover $13 million of the district's $19 million funding gap. The district is counting on Congress to make up the $6 million difference.
