Portland Police Officer Shoots And Kills Man In Washington Park

A Portland police officer shot and killed a man in Washington Park Monday.

Police spokeswoman Mary Wheat said there was a disturbance at the Hoyt Arboretum near an office. Wheat says the first officer to respond wound up firing his gun.

“When the first officer arrived, he reported that shots had been fired, and we immediately called for medical assistance. We do have a deceased adult male at the scene, and the officer did fire his weapon," she said.

Wheat says the officer’s shot killed the man, but she wouldn’t say if the victim was holding a weapon. Wheat said some of those details, and the name of the victim, would be released Tuesday.

The officer’s name may not be made public until later in the week.

Portland police have been under intense scrutiny, following the recent fatal shooting of an unarmed man in January.

Police commissioner Dan Saltzman was briefly at the scene of Monday’s shooting.
