Portland Mayor, Police Seek Community Help In Wake Of Recent Shootings
Portland's mayor and police are calling for help after four shootings in less than a week -- two of them were fatal. Kristian Foden-Vencil reports.
The latest shooting happened Monday night, after two teenagers argued on a bus.
A 16-year-old victim was shot to death after he got off in Northeast Portland. A 17-year-old has been arrested and charged with one count of Murder.
Mayor Sam Adams says there appears to be an increase in gang activity.
Sam Adams: "So these shootings are upsetting obviously, they're tragic. And they are preventable."
The mayor asked for Portlanders to: pass on tips to police; volunteer to staff recreational activities over the summer; join neighborhood watch groups; and call 9-1-1 if they see a gun.
Portland Police are responding by moving officers to gang enforcement teams from the transit division, the traffic division and each of the city's three precincts.
Officers say the aim is enforcement, but also to reach out for positive communication with young people.
