Portland Delays, Broadens Debate Over Ballpark

Portland is still wrestling with where to put a new ballpark.

City Council has delayed taking a vote on the issue, in an attempt to address how to fit a park into the Rose Quarter without demolishing the Memorial Coliseum.

As Rob Manning reports, putting the park in Southeast is back, as well.

The 89 million dollar plan to move the Portland Beavers’ baseball team into a new ballpark, and make PGE Park a better soccer stadium team has hit some snags.

Supporters and officials have struggled to fit both a new ballpark and plans for an entertainment district into the relatively small Rose Quarter area.

Now, Mayor Sam Adams and sports’ owner, Merritt Paulson, have agreed to delay a council vote on a new stadium site. They’re also reviving the possibility of building the ballpark in the Lents’ neighborhood. That was discussed last fall, but was later dropped.

Lents neighborhood association communications chair, Jeff Rose, says he's telling people in the area not to jump to conclusions.

Jeff Rose: “If you’re for the ballpark, don’t get your hopes too high, and if you’re against it, don’t start worrying yet.”

Officials haven’t said how soon they’ll vote on a ballpark location.

But owner, Paulson, suggests the council shouldn’t wait past this summer.
