Portland Begins 'I Brake For People' Campaign
Portland, OR October 22, 2007 12:51 p.m.
Walking and biking can be dangerous activities in Portland. One of every three traffic fatalities in the city is either a pedestrian or a bicyclist.
To combat the problem, the city launched a new campaign Monday.
Office of Transportation spokeswoman, Cheryl Kuck, says there’s a new slogan and bumper sticker: ‘I Brake for People.’
Cheryl Kuck: “Pedestrian safety is a major concern in Portland. Residents continue to cite it among their top four neighborhood concerns along with bicycle safety and traffic congestion. These are next to the top concern of affordable housing in Portland. So we know it’s a concern among residents.”
Kuck says 72 percent of pedestrian collisions are a result of driver error in downtown Portland. And citywide, about half of all pedestrian injuries happen in a crosswalk.
