PDX Loses Mexicana's Direct Flights To Mexico
Mexicana Airlines has announced it will end service from Portland to Guadalajara and Mexico City as of September 2nd. As Andrew Theen reports, officials at PDX are disappointed.
Just five years ago Mexicana Airlines opened non-stop service to Guadalajara. A year ago the airline expanded service to include the capital Mexico City too.
But the high cost of fuel proved to be a deal-breaker for the airline.
Steve Johnson is a spokesman for the Port of Portland. He says high fuel costs pose challenges for the entire industry.
Steve Johnson: "This is a service that will be missed by our passengers. We'll study this and take a look at any other possibilities, anything that might be out there in terms of non-stop service to these two markets."
Johnson says Alaska Airlines offers direct flights to Mexico in the winter.
Another casualty of high gas prices was announced Tuesday. Delta Airlines is canceling two flights from Salem to Salt Lake City.
