Parks Initiative Qualifies For Oregon's November Ballot
The Oregon Secretary of State says one last petition initiative gathered enough signatures to make it on the November ballot.
In 1998 voters approved a measure that earmarked 15 percent of Oregon Lottery profits to fund state parks and stream restoration projects. The earmark has amounted to $80 million in a good year.
It will sunset in 2014. So conservation groups have put a new initiative on the November ballot that would make it permanent.
Oregon's Democratic Speaker of the House Dave Hunt has said the initiative will tie up funds the state needs for other services.
Jessica Moskovits disagrees. She's with the group behind the initiative, Oregonians For Parks, Water, and Wildlife.
Jessica Moskovits: "It is true that this measure sets aside a very small amount of money comparatively that is outside the reach of Salem legislators. And I can understand if that would be a little frustrating."
Three other citizen initiatives and three legislative referrals will also appear on the ballot in November.
