On Our Minds: OPB's Series On Mental Health Care In Oregon

Welcome to our special half-hour companion to “On Our Minds,” OPB’s series on mental health in Oregon. I’m Allison Frost.

On Our Minds

OPB's series on mental health care in Oregon

The health system in Oregon, as in the rest of the United States is in crisis.

Costs are skyrocketing, millions of children and adults remain uninsured and even working people are going without health care. Presidential candidates are promising plans that will come to the rescue.

Here at OPB, we’re focusing on one aspect of the health care system in Oregon: mental health.

Our new series, "On Our Minds," examines who's getting and giving mental health care.

We’ve reported nine in-depth features over the last 5 weeks.

We’ve heard the voices of people who work in the state hospital and those who’ve been in a state hospital.

We’ve told the stories of patients and mental health care workers, addicts and drug treatment providers, and  people who have lost someone they love to suicide.

People who are living with mental illness are everywhere you turn, even if you don’t know it.

National estimates say about one in four adult Americans have a diagnosable  mental illness in any given year.

In Oregon, it’s estimated that 13 percent of our 900 thousand children have a mental health disorder.

In this half-hour show, we’ll highlight some of those voices – and not just those who are struggling but also  those who are making their way, coming up with solutions, committed to making a difference in our communities.

And while we can’t promise to leave you with all the right answers, we can promise to leave you with some of the right questions.
