Oregon Symphony Album Makes Best Seller List
The Oregon Symphony has hit a big milestone for its recording, "Music in a Time of War." Its record company is nearly out of copies, and is preparing a second pressing.
Favorable reviews of the program splashed across the New York Times applauded conductor Carlos Kalmar and what the paper called the Symphony's "incendiary" energy. When the live recording became available, Symphony President Elaine Calder says the recording proved its appeal to a nationwide audience.
"We showed up on the Billboard Best Selling list for Traditional Classical. You can't do that just selling to friends and neighbors," says Calder.
Calder says the Symphony's record label, Pentatone, will make another two thousand copies.
The program includes works by Benjamin Britten and John Adams - not traditionally considerd the blockbusters. Calder says she's grateful the label was willing to take a gamble on making the recording. She says sales have covered the $60,000 cost of production.
