Oregon Stimulus Package Signed Into Law
Oregon lawmakers gave the go-ahead Thursday to a $175 million economic stimulus package. Supporters say it will put 3000 people to work. Salem correspondent Chris Lehman reports.
The state will borrow money to do things like pave parking lots or renovate bathrooms at state buildings. The list no longer includes a few items that had prompted some ridicule, such as moss removal and sealing some cracked walls.
The projects were chosen based on how quickly they could begin -- some as soon as a few weeks from now.
The state plans to raise the money in a bond sale next week.
During a lengthy floor debate, Democratic Representative Paul Holvey said lawmakers needed to act fast.
Rep. Paul Holvey: “The unemployed cannot wait. They could be losing their homes if they cannot get back to work.”
Three Republicans joined all 36 House Democrats in approving the plan. The Senate passed the bill last week.
Governor Ted Kulongoski signed it into law at a ceremony just minutes after final passage.
