Oregon Guard Unit Headed To Iraq
Oregon is saying goodbye to several National Guard helicopter pilots and other personnel. As April Baer reports, they're on their way to provide medical transport in Iraq.
Charlie Company, 7th battalion, 158th Aviation has the job of transporting patients. About 130 of its members are headed for training, then on to Iraq.
Its men and women assembled in Salem in a hangar packed with friends and family members -- and Governor Ted Kulongoski and Congressman Kurt Schrader.
Kurt Schrader "I don't think words can express the gratitude we feel for the sacrifice you've made. But I give you my pledge that we will stand by you when you're overseas."
Bob Harding of Dayton was saying goodbye to his granddaughter Sabrina, a helicopter pilot.
Bob Harding "Any time we send these young people into harm's way, things get pretty emotional. Some of these young people have been deployed several times."
The Oregon Guard will see off three thousand citizen soldiers this winter and spring.
