Oregon lawmakers are considering a ban on a chemical called BPA in certain products.

Studies of Bisphenol A say it increases the risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes, among other health problems.

The Oregon legislation targets products made for children, such as baby bottles and formula containers.

Backers of the bill such as Democratic Representative Ben Cannon say children are especially vulnerable to BPA.

Ben Cannon:  "This bill is based on a simple premise: That parents have enough to worry about already. They should be able to trust the sippy cup."

At a hearing Thursday, opponents from the chemicals and food processing industry disputed the health risks of BPA.

The groups add that banning it would increase costs to consumers.

Washington lawmakers are considering a similar ban on certain products containing BPA.
