Portland received high marks in a road safety report released Monday. Ryan Knutson reports.

Portland was rated as the 9th safest metropolitan area for pedestrians in a nationwide study out Monday by Transportation for America, a national transportation safety coalition.

The study ranks communities based on the rate of pedestrian deaths relative to the number of people who walk. Last year, five pedestrians were killed in Portland. But so far this year, 10 people have already died.

Greg Raisman of the Portland Bureau of Transportation says there’s still room for improvement.

Greg Raisman: "I don't think there's ever a point where we're going to feel satisfied that we've made our streets as safe as they can be."

Corvallis was listed as the safest community in the state, followed by Bend, Eugene/Springfield, and then Portland.

The most dangerous city in America for pedestrians was Orlando, Fla., according to the study.
