Oregon Attorney General Investigating 'No' Campaign Robo-Calls
Conservative activist Jeff Kropf says a robo-call bearing his voice was not a violation of Oregon law.
Kropf is with Americans for Prosperity Oregon, and has been helping the opposition campaign against Measures 66 and 67.
He confirms that he voiced a message that urged voters to vote, and to consider voting against the two tax measures.
Over the weekend, the Yes on 66 and 67 campaign filed a complaint, saying the message was sent illegally to people on the federal Do Not Call list.
Kropf says his group reads the situation differently.
Jeff Kropf “Our legal counsel disagrees with that particular interpretation of Oregon statute, because it simply doesn’t say that in the plain language of the law.”
The Oregon Attorney General’s office is investigating the message.
Spokesman Tony Green confirmed that if a group is found to have placed robo-calls to names on the federal list, it would indeed be a violation of the law, in the eyes of state attorneys. But he says an investigation is ongoing.
Violations of the law are punishable by as much as a $5000 fine, but the state has never done more than advise campaigns to adjust their call list, for similar situations.
