OHSU Brain Researcher Wins Javitz Neuroscience Award

Oregon brain researcher Dr. Stephen Back got some great news recently. It was the academic equivalent of winning the lottery.
What the OHSU doctor won was the Javitz Neuroscience Investigator Award. Unlike the lottery the award is quite prestigious. But like the lottery, the federal grant also means a lot of cash.
Two million, three hundred and forty-six thousand, three hundred and thirteen dollars to be exact. Back says his research into brain injuries using tissue and animal models is especially relevant for the 60,000 premature babies born every year in the U.S. They’re at especially high risk of cerebral palsy.
Dr. Back talked with Oregon Considered host Allison Frost about the award.

The multi-million dollar Javits award is named for the late Senator Jacob Javits, who suffered from the neurological disease ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
