North Idaho Theme Park Bucks National Trend
Many American theme parks are struggling. The company that runs the Six Flags parks recently declared bankruptcy and Disney laid off employees in March. But one north Idaho theme park says its attendance is actually up this summer, despite the bad economy.
Inland Northwest Correspondent Doug Nadvornick reports.
A train shuttles people between attractions at the Silverwood Theme Park, about 15 miles north of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
Its old West theme plays on the region's timber and railroad history. For thrillseekers, it boasts four roller coasters, two big wavepools and a variety of other water attractions.
Silverwood spokesman Mark Robitaille says, despite the $40 entrance fee, he says it's proved to be an attractive place for people looking to save money by staying close to home.
Mark Robitaille: “People can come to this park and have a good couple, few days in our region, visiting the park, and not having to fly all the way to California or Florida.”
As long as the weather stays sunny and warm, Robitaille expects Silverwood will have a banner summer, not the roller coaster ride that other parks are experiencing.
