Portland Shooting Kills 1, Wounds Officer
Portland's new police chief's first night on the job brought an exchange of gunfire. As Rob Manning reports, one man is dead and an officer is recovering in the hospital.
According to police accounts, a special enforcement unit in Northeast Portland initially pulled a car over for making turns and lane changes without signaling.
Police say the driver was reluctant to pull over, and used profanity when an officer approached the car. Officers used a taser on the driver. Chief Mike Reese says the driver responded by going for a gun.
Reese: "Officer Christopher Burley was shot twice in the legs. Other officers returned fire. The suspect was shot and killed at the scene. It was obviously a very traumatic incident for the officers involved, and for the public that witnessed it."
The name of the victim hasn't been released yet, nor have other details in the case. Investigators say they've spoken to six police officers and at least 16 other witnesses.
Mayor Sam Adams and Chief Reese promise to release further details quickly.© 2010 OPB
