National Parks Offer Free Admission For MLK Holiday
The federal government is offering free days at all its National Parks Monday -- in honor of Martin Luther King Junior.
It won't cost anything to visit Mount Rainier, Crater Lake or many other Pacific Northwest favorites.
The nation boasts 394 National Parks. Only about one third charge fees -- in the form of entrance charges, vehicle passes and tickets. But National Parks Service spokesman, David Barna, says they offer five free times throughout the year so people can enjoy the seasons.
David Barna: "We're aware that many people make their New Year's resolution to spend more time with their loved ones, maybe spend some time outdoor, maybe get a little exercise and lose weight. And there's no better place than the superb recreational opportunities you'll find in America's national parks and we hope everyone comes out and sees us this year."
The other free days this year are in April during National Park Week, on the first day of summer in June, on Public Lands Day September 24th, and over Veterans Day Weekend in November.
