National Geographic unveiled a new website Wednesday, asking people to identify their favorite spots in the Central Cascades. Kristian Foden-Vencil reports.

National Geographic is working with Oregon and Washington to develop a ‘Geotourism map’ of the area from Mount Rainier to Crater Lake. And they want locals to go to thecascades.com to nominate landmarks, attractions, activities, events and businesses that define the region’s character.

National Georgraphic’s director for Sustainable Destinations, Jim Dion, says the aim is to contribute to the economic health of tourist communities, but in a way that balances growth and conservation.

Jim Dion: “The map’s an editorial production of National Geographic Magazine, but it’s going to be created by you, and it’s going to be written by you, and you’re going to provide the photographs and the ideas and the inspirations and the themes and the content that goes on that map.”

Only 150 points will be included on the map. Suggestions will be edited by a local Stewardship Council and the magazine. It’ll be unveiled in the fall.
