Multnomah County Tries Online Public Input Experiment

Multnomah County has launched an online forum as part of its budget process.

However, the pilot project is starting off with just one question regarding health and safety in the community.

Those who sign in can answer the question.  But they can also read and vote on the responses of other community members.

The suggestions with the most votes will rise to the top of the list.  But users are limited to only 10 votes each.

Users only need to enter their name and e-mail address or they can access the service with their Facebook, Twitter or Google IDs. The county says user e-mail addresses will be stored securely and only available to county officials.

County Board Chairman Ted Wheeler says the online pilot is not meant to replace the two public forums hosted by the county this month. "We're trying to reach people who either are very engaged in the process and want to use this as a tool to supplement their participation in our board meetings, our budget meetings. Alternatively, we want to reach out to new people who don't typically show up for meetings or don't have the time to show up for meetings,” he said.

Regarding the feedback, he added, "I will look at it personally, my colleagues will look at it.  And we'll weigh it along with the comments we get at our community budget forums in terms of how we should prioritize [our] limited dollars.

The online forum will be up until March 22nd.
