Multnomah County Drownings Prompt Water Safety Warnings
Three weekend drownings in Multnomah County have brought warnings from the Sheriff's Office regarding water safety. The warm weather draws people to the river, but swimmers and others are being cautioned about the danger of rushing water.
Paul Corah is the public information officer for Portland Fire and Rescue. He discourages untrained people from attempting water rescues.
Paul Corah: "We lose lives every year as people try to save other people, if they don't know how to swim or the proper lifesaving procedures to save somebody from water. Having something to throw to someone who is having a hard time swimming is vitally important, like a life ring or a rope or maybe a stick or something you could put out there that would sure be helpful."
Corah says people should wear life jackets, whether boating or inner-tubing on rivers. He also advises swimming where certified lifeguards are on duty.
