The Long Campaign Begins For An Idaho Gubernatorial Candidate
Idaho is considered one of the reddest states in America. But Democrats are excited about their new gubernatorial candidate's chances. Doug Nadvornick caught up with Keith Allred during the candidate's recent visit to Coeur d'Alene.
Keith Allred is a study in contrasts. He grew up on a ranch in southern Idaho, but went on to become a college professor at Harvard and later a professional mediator.
Through his group Common Interest, Allred says he has worked with the Idaho legislature to reach consensus on a broad range of issues.
Now, he says he wants to take that collaborative approach to the governor's mansion.
But at a meeting with Democrats in Coeur d'Alene, Allred had harsh criticisms for Idaho incumbent Governor Butch Otter.
Keith Allred: “One is that he so cozy with special interests. And the second is that he just doesn't bring much competency or hard work as a leader.”
Democrats like Mary Lou Reed think Allred can actually win.
Mary Lou Reed: “Our excitement about his decision to run for governor is absolutely limitless.”
Idaho last elected a Democratic governor in 1990.
