Locke Receives Gentle Grilling By U.S. Senate
Former Washington Governor Gary Locke got a gentle grilling from U.S. Senators Wednesday. During a confirmation hearing, the Senate Commerce Committee gave every indication that Locke will receive quick and easy approval as the next Secretary of Commerce.
Locke told the Senators that he wants to reduce the U.S. trade deficit by increasing exports.
Gary Locke: “More than free trade, I believe in fair trade. And this means, we must enforce our trade agreements. If confirmed, I will not only help negotiate complex trade agreements, I will enforce them.”
Most of the questions the former Democratic governor fielded had to do with other topics. Locke indicated he’ll be playing catch-up on preparations for the 2010 U.S. Census.
Senators also urged him to give immediate attention to preparing TV viewers for the transition to all-digital broadcasting.
A committee vote to forward Locke’s nomination to the Senate floor could happen as early as Thursday morning.
