LNG Plan Approved, Challenges Underway
Portland, OR March 21, 2008 4:18 p.m.
Clatsop County commissioners have voted 4-to-1 to approve land-use changes needed for a liquefied natural gas plant on the Columbia River. As Rob Manning reports, it will be challenged on multiple fronts.
Supporters of the Bradwood Landing proposal are applauding the Clatsop County decision, but they’re preparing for a potential onslaught of litigation.
Opponents say they will fight the decision in court, beginning with the Land Use Board of Appeals.
In addition, Brent Foster with Columbia Riverkeeper, says opponents are also trying to put part of the decision before county voters.
Brent Foster: “This proposed pipeline with the LNG terminals would go through some designated park and open space, and in order to allow it, the county had to change the law that affects the whole county. And that’s the very specific issue that would go to voters.”
Clatsop County officials and LNG opponents may wind up in court arguing over the legality of referring the county decision to the ballot. If it’s legal, they’d need to collect about 600 signatures.
