Legislative Leaders Repeat Opposition To Special Session
An effort to call Oregon lawmakers back for a special budget balancing session is falling short so far.
Republican leaders have said a special session is the best way to tackle a half-billion dollar budget shortfall. But Monday Democratic leaders in the House and Senate urged colleagues to vote against the proposal.
So far, Democrats including Representative Deborah Boone have been cool to the idea of returning to Salem.
Deborah Boone: “I think it's too soon to go into a special session. I think we need to wait until we get a little more information and then also see what the agencies are going to have to say about what a nine percent cut means to them.”
Governor Ted Kulongoski has called for across the board cuts of nine percent. Those cut lists are expected to go public Wednesday morning, just hours before the deadline for lawmakers to vote on a special session.
