Latest Round Of Budget Cuts Bring Uncertainty
State agencies in Oregon announced their plans Thursday for how they plan to implement the latest round of across the board cuts.
Lawmakers say they'll use a combination of reserve funds and new federal cash to head off some of the most drastic cutbacks to education, corrections and human services. But that leaves workers at other agencies wondering about their future.
131 employees at the Oregon Department of Revenue will get layoff notices next week. The department hasn't been mentioned by legislative leadership as a priority for additional funding.
So spokeswoman Rosemary Hardin says the agency is operating under the assumption that it won't get bailed out.
Rosemary Hardin: "We are going forward with those plans for right now. That could change, because this is such a fluid situation."
Over at the Oregon Department of Forestry, officials say they can shift funds internally to offset a deep cut to the fire fighting program. But spokesman Rod Nichols says it's not a sure thing.
Rod Nichols: "If you call me in three weeks from now, I may give you a different message."
This is the second round of across the board cuts in Oregon this year. The spending reductions come as the state's projected tax collections have plunged by a billion dollars.
