Lane County To Hold Public Discussion Of Jail Budget
This week residents of Lane County are invited to a meeting to talk about problems funding the County jail, and other public safety budget items. The Lane County jail is releasing fewer inmates than it was to relieve crowding. But it’s still letting offenders go early.
Citizen Advocates for Public Safety, or CAPS, is a committee created to find solutions to jail overcrowding.
At a meeting in Florence last week, CAPS co-chair Jean Tate said the committee wants to see results of a poll that may be completed by the end of the month.
“If that poll shows the majority of people are wiling to fund some human services as well as public safety, we may well recommend a levy. But if that poll shows that there’s not much support. We’re not going to do it. We’re not going not be part of another failure," she said.
Voters in Lane County have rejected several tax levies for public safety funding in recent years.
This week’s meeting is scheduled Tuesday night at the Lane County Fairgrounds.
